Heading out on my magnificent quest
My sword is sheathed and buckled across my chest
The thrill of dragons and magic doors
The unknown is a compelling force
Mysteries and shiny hoards galore
I seek it all and then some more
Errands must be run, much to my woe
Is it mediocrity or boredom that is my foe?
A person I encounter, a trade must be made
Normal I must pretend, a fruitful masquerade
A modicum of balance, an illusion of calm
Conceal the impatience under oodles of charm
With the objects gathered and the tradesman past
I set out on my whimsical quest at last
A hint of a cave beneath the waterfall I spy
A lengthy walk, would that I could fly!
Traipsing the wearying terrain to the fall
The motive for the journey I fail to recall
What for, I wonder, did I embark on this quest?
Wouldn’t it be delightful to abandon this test?
Perhaps for a moment, a pause I can permit
Peruse the advice of mentors as I sit
The wisdom of my books shall be imbued
A welcome rest, a much needed interlude
I read the tales of dragons and warriors before
I am mesmerised, my quest is worthy no more
It is time to go back to the map and the board
Forgotten and forlorn is this cave and its hoard
As I lay under the starry skies that night
I wonder if I am lost, if I will never see the light
The mind and desire are fickle I decide
Will I ever find my dragon, forever by my side?
Will a life spent exploring and imagining do?
In my mind, I am flying, unfettered and true
A single dragon is wondrous, I am sure
But how about a million, do you see the allure?
Is my desire for eternal magic an attainable feat?
Or is the wisdom of older wizards complete?
Is there a single truth about life?
I fear regret but I wish to do more than survive
This is an answer I must find for myself, I fear
But the path is not even remotely clear
I am daunted at the thought of this uncharted trail
But maybe it is a journey, another mountain to scale
My mind is muddled and I wish to freeze
What if I get lost, wandering through the trees?
But lost I am now in this forest of doubt
Judging and questioning how life will play out
My thoughts are ringing with apprehension deep
Perhaps I need to listen, yet make the leap
“The future might not hold what makes me quail”
I whisper to myself, stepping off the trail
